CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS

Corticosteroid injections are often referred to as Cortisone Shots.  These injections are used primarily to treat pain and inflammation within a joint. On occasion a soft tissue problem may benefit from a steroid injection.

This injection is typically placed with an anesthetic (freezing) within the same needle.  The freezing will last a few hours allowing us to confirm the injection is in the right place.  It is important that you take note and even log your symptoms during this time.  This can help Dr. Roberts manage your treatment options in the future.  For example, if you had no relief while the freezing was in place, further tests might be needed to ensure that this is the correct target for future treatments.

After the freezing wears off, you may have more pain for a period of time as you have just had an injection.  It is ok to rest, ice and take over the counter tylenol/ibuprofen during this time as needed.  It may take upwards of 3-7 days for the steroid to take full effect.

Risks to this type of procedure are rare but good to be aware of.  There is a small risk of infection, risk of little or no relief, recurrent symptoms, allergic reaction and skin blanching at the injection site.

Talk to Dr. Roberts to see if a cortisone injection may be right for you.
