ACTIVITY AFTER SURGERY
By signing up for surgery, you are committing to following the post op protocol outlined by Dr. Roberts. You will receive specific written instructions following your surgery but overall in most cases, you will need to be prepared going into surgery to be FULLY off your foot/leg/arm (“non-weightbearing”) for at least 2 weeks and as long as 6 weeks. Non weightbearing means your surgical foot CANNOT be on the ground or for arms, no pushing, pulling or lifting. You will need extra help and equipment to be successful with this. Here are some ideas to help. A redcross rental form can be provided by the office as needed.
Crutches
Walker
Knee scooter
Shower chair/stool
Shower bar
Wheelchair
Elevation pillow
If you haven’t used crutches/walker before, you may want to visit a physiotherapist pre operatively to ensure you feel safe on them. It is important to still move around after surgery to keep blood clot risk low.
If you need a boot or post-operative sandal, the office will direct you and provide you a prescription for this. If you already have a boot/post-operative sandal, it must be in excellent condition and clean. Otherwise, you’ll be instructed to obtain a new one to keep your surgical foot clean and safe.
