VISOSUPPLEMENTATION
Visocosupplementation or Hylauronic Acid (HA) injections, is a type of injection that is primarily used in arthritic joints. Hylauronic Acid is a natural component of synovial fluid ( the fluid within a joint) . These gel-like injections (such as Durolane, Cingal or Synvisc) provide lubrication to the joint and helps to act as a shock absorder within the joint. Studies have suggested that HA injections for joint problems may last longer and provide more relief than steroid injections but not all studies support this. That said, some people report significant relief for arthritis pain with HA injections. These benefits have been seen in patients with osteochondral (OCL) lesions of the talus as well either before or after OCL surgery.

Certain types of HA are also approved for use in soft tissue conditions such as tendinopathy or ligament injuries (SportVisc). These injections may help pain from tendinopathy in the achilles tendon for example. In particular it can have a role after an acute ankle sprain as it can help initial pain and also help facilitate faster healing as it augments the hyaluronic acid naturally in the soft tissue surrounding a ligament or tendon and provides support, lubrication, and hydration to the injured tissue.

HA Injections may or may not be right for your problem. Dr. Roberts can discuss these considerations with you if you are interested in this type of treatment.
